Gregoire names business bigwigs as UW regents | Strange ...

Gov. Chris Gregoire on Tuesday named the Alaska Airlines CEO Bill Ayer and Boeing executive Pat Shanahan as new members of the University of Washington Board of Regents, and reappointed Tacoma business leader Herb Simon to the board.

Appointment as a UW Regent is considered the most prestigious post that a governor can bestow.? It also comes with work.? Simon served as board president during selection of new UW President Michael Young.

Ayer has served as CEO of Alaska Airlines and the Alaska Air Group since 2002.? He chairs the Puget Sound Energy board and is on the UW Business Advisory Board.? Ayer earned a masters degree in business from the UW.

Shanahan is vice president and general manager for airplane programs at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.? He formerly served as vice president for missile defense systems with the company.? Shanahan is a UW alumnus in mechanical engineering.

Simon is co-founder of Simon Johnson LLC, an investment company focusing on real estate and capital venture projects.? He is a longtime generous donor to Democratic candidates.

In naming the Regents, Gov. Gregoire stated:? ?The University of Washington is consistently ranked one of the top research universities in the world, and I have every intention of keeping it that way.?

The University of Washington sustained a $207 million (32.5 percent) state funding cut for the 2011-13 biennium.? The state?s premier university has, in the last few years, lost half of its state funding ? money that sustains the UW?s core undergraduate curriculum.

In 1990, the state supplied an estimated 82 percent of the $17,000 a year it cost to put a student through the University of Washington.? Two decades later, after a string of tuition hikes, students pay 70 percent of the bill and the state only 30 percent.

The cost of everything has gone up since 1990, but state spending on public higher education is almost exactly what it was with a decade remaining in the 20th Century.
