Britain Scrambles To Provide Security For London Olympics

A member of the British Army, left, walks past security guards at the Olympic Park, Wednesday, in London. (AP)

London is buzzing with preparations and anticipation, as more athletes arrive for the Olympic games that start in just nine days.

Many mistakes are making headlines, but the biggest of all is probably the shortfall in security guards. It?s been called ?a humiliating shambles? by one British lawmaker.

The Ministry of Defense has already called in 3,500 British troops and they are making plans to deploy up to 2,000 more to fill the gap created by the security company G4S. G4S was hired to provide security for the Olympics, but it recently came out that they have failed to bring in enough trained security guards.

Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH.

The Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH. lens ($399.95 direct) is the smallest zoom lens available for the Micro Four Thirds camera system. It accomplishes this status thanks to its power zoom design, which allows the lens to collapse into itself when not in use; when collapsed it protrudes only 1.9 inches from its mount. The zoom mechanism and manual focus are controlled by toggle switches on the left side of the lens?as opposed to traditional camera lenses that feature separate manual zoom and focus rings.

The lens covers a 28-84mm field of view in terms of traditional 35mm photography, and features Panasonic's Power O.I.S. stabilization system. This system provides stabilization when recording video as well as shooting stills. To further enhance video capture, the lens's autofocus motor is silent so the sound of refocusing will not be picked up on the soundtrack of videos.

I used Imatest to measure the sharpness of this lens when used with the 16-megapixel Lumix DMC-GX1 ($799.99, 3.5 stars) digital camera. The lens didn't perform admirably, falling shy of the score of 1,800 lines per picture height that denotes a sharp optic. At 14mm f/3.5 it managed 1,676 lines, improving to just 1,719 lines at f/5.6. It fared worse at 28mm, grabbing 1,670 lines at f/4.8 and at f/5.6. It was softest at 42mm, netting 1,485 lines at f/5.6 and 1,558 lines at f/8. Distortion is also an issue, as the lens exhibits 1.7 percent barrel distortion at its widest setting. It's less noticeable at 28mm, where barrel distortion is only 0.4 percent, and at the telephoto end there is a?negligible?0.02 percent of the pincushion variety.

There are better zoom lenses that cover this range in the Micro Four Thirds system, but none are as compact.?You are trading a certain level of image quality for size with this lens. We've tested the standard M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm II R ($249.99) on a number of different cameras and its sharpness results always impress. When mounted to the Olympus PEN E-PM1 ($499.99, 4 stars) it notched 2,186 lines on the wide end, though it did soften to 1,738 lines at 28mm and 1,508 lines at 42mm. Even though that lens has a collapsible design, it is noticeably larger than the Panasonic?G X Vario PZ 14-42mm lens and doesn't offer optical stabilization..

If you're in the market for a compact zoom lens for your Micro Four Thirds camera, this power zoom from Panasonic is the smallest you'll find, but there are compromises in optical quality due to the lens's compact form factor. If you're willing to live with those, the PZ 14-42mm will make it easier to squeeze your camera into your bag. Videographers will appreciate the silent operation, but if size isn't a major concern, either stick with the standard 14-42mm that shipped with your camera, or save up for a zoom lens that prioritizes image quality over miniaturization.

Best Kids Parties: Blue Ombre My Party | Apartment Therapy

Name: Miles (1)
Location: Rockville, MD

We wanted a low-key but vibrant celebration for our littlest Miles' first birthday. The gathering was mainly to celebrate Miles' dol -- a Korean first birthday.

We thought using an ombre blue scheme would be festive, bright and fun. The party details include a DIY ombre blue crepe paper backdrop, a delicious ombre cake made by a local baker, blue balloons, flowers and homemade good/desserts. We also made ombre friendship bracelets as favors.

We spent hours making bean/bead towers that are typically placed on dol tables. We ordered tons of rice cakes. We also held a doljabi, which is a ceremony that "predicts" the baby's future. Half a dozen items (typically money, rice, a ball, thread, pencil) are placed in front of the baby and whatever he/she chooses will signify his interest as an adult.

Overally, we loved that Miles' party was filled with the essentials: our close friends and family, hearty/home-cooked food and loads of fun.

Thanks Ellyn!

This U.S. grads have it tough? Meet Europe's class of '12

Athina Prassa in Athens mastered English in four years studying at a private university. It's a skill that may not help her much as she hunts for work while hard-right thugs roam her blighted neighborhood.

Lucy Nicholls in London graduated from fashion school brimming with optimism. It took just a week for real life to step in: She fell victim to a scam that left her broke and desperate for work.

Rafael Gonzalez del Castillo in Madrid has pulled countless all-nighters to win a degree in his passion, architecture, just as Spain's building bust has littered the country with abandoned buildings.

Moira Koffi in Paris left her widowed mom in Normandy for "bohemian life" at the Sorbonne. Now the communications grad is heading into the real world.

Lutz Henschel in Berlin graduated near the top of his class with a degree in electrical engineering in Europe's top economy. Since January he's sent out nearly 40 applications, and is still chasing his dream of working in renewable energies.

Meet AP's Class of 2012: five talented and vibrant university graduates who face a rocky future as they emerge from the cocoon of student life and head into the worst economic crisis Europe has seen since the end of World War II, one that threatens to engulf an entire generation.

They're excited. They're scared. They're full of hope. And full of uncertainty.

The Associated Press will follow them over the next 12 months as their lives unfold in the crisis ? through text, photo and video dispatches, as well as webcam diaries and tweets straight from the graduates themselves.

Their drama will play out amid the somber realities of Europe's financial crisis, with profound implications for the future of young people everywhere. After all, the European Union is this interconnected world's biggest economy, and it's struggling badly.

Austerity is eroding an envied way of life. Long-cherished certainties about cradle-to-grave welfare are evaporating. As leaders scramble to extinguish one debt fire after another, the futures of ordinary people grow dimmer.

And a parallel crisis of demography is developing as the population ages rapidly, creating even more of a burden on this generation of young people who are finding it so hard to carve out a future.

Those twin crises will challenge Lutz as he leaves his studies in Europe's strongest economy, even with its low youth unemployment rate of 8 percent.

They will haunt Lucy and Moira in Britain and France, where more than a fifth of all young people are unemployed.

Athina and Rafa worry they'll have to move abroad to survive. In Greece and Spain, youth unemployment is above 50 percent.

"I don't think this time is suitable for fulfilling your dreams," Athina says. "That can happen later."

This is the AP Class of 2012:

ATHINA PRASSA, 22

"Want to see my fridge?" Athina asks a visitor.

She's a natural optimist but it's hard to keep up the cheer as she gazes at the lonely milk carton and container of butter on empty shelves.

"There are days," she says, "where I forget what it's like to eat meat."

Athina left her family home on the island of Lemnos four years ago to study at the private Hellenic-American University in Athens. Her parents were able to pay for her studies but not much more. It meant she ended up in a crime-ridden neighborhood notorious for its extreme-right thugs, where she lives rent-free in an apartment owned by her godmother.

Her parents sent her 100 euros ($120) a week at first, then cut it back to half that when they couldn't afford more.

Now she's on her own.

"My parents can't send me money anymore to live here," she says. "I'm really scared about the future."

She longs to work in Athens but is worried the crisis will force her to leave Greece.

She says the hard times, brought on by years of profligate spending in Greece, have taught her some valuable lessons: "It's funny, but I think the crisis has turned me into a better person, because I definitely hate money right now. ... I see how people go crazy about money."

She despises the anti-immigrant Golden Dawn party that roams her neighborhood.

Through all the turmoil, Athina still holds onto her dreams. She wants to work in fashion. She wants to backpack around Europe. She wants to visit America.

And she still manages to have fun with her friends in Athens ? which she calls "a jungle" ? by taking advantage of the beaches and free concerts and art exhibitions.

At a recent gallery event, Athina stood staring at a photograph of a demolition site. Spray-painted over it in red was one word: FUTURE.

LUCY NICHOLLS, 22

Lucy sits against a backdrop of rose-patterned wallpaper emblazoned with the word "Wish," the name of the fashion magazine that's her graduation project.

She's presenting it at a London show called RAW to launch Middlesex University fashion grads like herself, exuding a mixture of confidence and jitters.

The fashionista with artsy glasses and bright red hair has paid a Lithuanian company 2,000 pounds ($1,550) to print 500 copies of WISH, which she's planning to ship to customers.

She concedes her optimism verges on the "cocky."

But she also has a dose of realism: "I'm going to need money very soon. Luckily the magazine is going to bring in a tiny, weeny little bit ... But I'm going to need a job pretty soon, that's for sure."

A week later, disaster strikes: The printing company has gone bust and disappeared with her money.

Now she's broke and needs a job fast: "I realize because of this catastrophe with the magazine I need work now. I really, really need to be making money."

The setback doesn't keep her down for long: She's picked up some freelance photography work for a London PR agency that's helping her pay the bills. Meanwhile, she has revamped her resume to wade into her first real job hunt.

Lucy says her teachers didn't prepare her for life: "We don't get told anything about industry or the real world. We didn't ever get told about what jobs were really out there."

Half-English, half-French, Lucy comes from a rural town in Surrey, south of London. She says her father warned her about how hard life can be: "You have to be prepared to be living off beans."

Fluent in French, she says she could try Paris for a while ? but things aren't much better there, and in any case she sees her future in the British capital.

"I've been told by everybody London is where it's at, London is where you've got to be."

RAFAEL GONZALEZ DEL CASTILLO, 24

Rafael ? or Rafa as everyone calls him ? is a budding architect in a nation that's gone through one of the worst building busts in modern times.

He loves his field. He loves Spain. But he fears his future lies abroad.

Like millions of other young Spaniards trapped in the nation's devastating economic spiral, he says he'll jump at any opportunity for rewarding work ? be it in Sudan, Chile, Alaska or Mongolia.

He just presented his final project ? a design for urban greenhouses and terraced farmland on the marshy banks of a river ? at Madrid's Polytechnic University. If it's approved by a jury, he'll officially be an architect in October.

Then what? A stroll through the wasteland.

The construction industry was crushed by the implosion of a real estate bubble in 2008. It's ground zero of Spain's economic crisis, with more than 1 million jobs lost in that industry alone.

Rafa, however, keeps on dreaming.

An actor in the university drama troupe, he talks a mile a minute with charm and eloquence, gushing enthusiasm for his chosen profession. He loves his studies so much he'd do it all over again ? despite the doom that hangs over the industry.

Rafa refuses to believe that after a five-year journey through one of Spain's most demanding schools, what awaits him is the edge of a cliff and a plunge into the dead-end jobs in bars or supermarkets that many of his fellow college grads are taking up to get by.

He breaks into this riff: "Since I was little, they told me, 'when you get to middle school, you will fail some subjects.' I did not fail. 'When you get to high school, your grades will go down.' They did not. 'When you get to university, you will fail.' OK, I have failed a few subjects, but I got by. So I do not want to be told again that there is not going to be any work. I simply do not believe it.

"It all depends on me."

Gonzalez is not angry about his plight. He says everybody in Spain is to blame ? consumers hooked on loans, banks that threw around the money, politicians who sat back and watched it all inflate dangerously.

"In the end," he says, "it is all of us at least a little bit."

MOIRA KOFFI, 22

Moira worries if she'll have a job when she gets back from vacation in Greece.

She worries about how she'll live in Paris once she has to leave student housing.

Above all ? following big gains by far-right parties in France, Greece and elsewhere ? the African-French communications grad worries about a racist wave engulfing Europe: "It's like the 1930s again. I don't get why people can recreate this atmosphere of hate and fear. It's crazy."

Moira just handed in her thesis at the Sorbonne, capping three years of study.

She started out as a journalism major, but switched to corporate communications when crisis hit in 2008.

"I wanted to be a journalist, but then I heard about everyone who couldn't find jobs," Moira says.

But by the time she graduated the downturn had expanded, and now half of France's new graduates have no work.

"Can it get any worse?" she says with a wry laugh. "Well, maybe if the European Union explodes."

Moira has had time to come to terms with the crisis. Its start coincided with her move to Paris four years ago. Leaving her widowed mother teaching school in a small town in Normandy, Moira made her way in the capital as countless young students have before her, counting her centimes and enjoying "la vie boheme" ? bohemian life.

The Sorbonne helped her find a short-term apprenticeship at a public relations agency, where she handles social media campaigns.

The four-day-a-week job ends in September. She wants to stay on, but there are no guarantees.

Moira budgets carefully, keeping expenses to around 600 euros ($750) a month. She goes out less than she did when she first moved to Paris, taking up hobbies like dressmaking and baking muffins. Her most recent creation? A "beautiful and classy" black dress. It's nearly finished after six months of work.

LUTZ HENSCHEL, 27

Lutz picks up his diploma in a soaring hall adorned with a sculpture of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. He savors a glass of champagne. Listens to the music.

With a masters in electrical engineering in Germany, Europe's most successful economy, he knows his prospects are brighter than those of millions of other university graduates across the continent.

But since finishing his studies in January, Lutz has sent out nearly 40 applications and been through about 15 interviews, only to keep hitting a brick wall.

"At the beginning I felt disappointed because I believed that I was the reason for the rejections," he says. "But now I think that a lot of companies have too high expectations."

Even facing a shortage of skilled workers, elite German companies have been notoriously unwilling to hire students straight out of university. Lutz sees himself trapped in a Catch-22: "They expect a graduate to have specific knowledge and experiences which I think is impossible to have right after graduation."

The Berlin native who teaches karate on the side dreams of a job in renewable energy.

This month he took a six-hour train journey south for an interview with German engineering giant Bosch.

Two days later, it was an hour-and-a-half train ride north for an interview with a German-Danish company that builds wind farms.

He's confident that the latest interview went well: He got to talk to real engineers, not just HR reps.

"It's a little bit discouraging at first, because everyone is saying, 'you are sought so much, you're an electrical engineer, everyone wants you,'" Lutz says. "But then you get out, and it's not true."

On the eve of the launch of Class of 2012, Lutz's fortunes turn. He sends out this tweet:

"I got my first official job offer! I will stay in Berlin, building elevators."

Developing electric circuits for elevators is a far cry from Lutz's ambition of making the world a better place through green technologies, but it's a start.

"How awesome," he tweets.

The New Stadium Wants College Football, Too

New_vikes_stadium_medium

If you look reeeeeeeaaaaaaaaally close, there's a #Wilfare drum beater there somewhere, but he's hard to hear over the awesomeness of the new stadium

The new stadium that's being built in Minneapolis--you know, the one that will keep our beloved Vikes in Minnesota for the next 30 years or so, has in it's sights more than just professional football.

If everything goes according to plan, not only will the new stadium host a Final Four and a Super Bowl, but the folks in charge are also exploring the possibility of hosting the NCAA National Championship.

The Authoritah has contacted the BCS folks and have asked them to take a look at the outline for the new facility to see if it would meet the requirements to host the new NCAA Football playoff championship game. The great thing about this is that the BCS will have their report back to the good folks in Minnesota prior to the Authoritah accepting bids from architectural firms.

The great thing about that is that if there's anything about the general plan of the stadium that doesn't meet the requirements to host said game, it can be fixed and given to the architectural firm that eventually wins the job. That way, the stadium can not only host a Super Bowl, but a Final Four, an NCAA football championship, and hey, what the heck, how about the B1G football championship as well.

If the new stadium does host all of that, I'm pretty sure it would be the only stadium to host both an NCAA basketball and football championship. Unless Jerry World beats us to it.

Either way...Suck It, Marty.

Elements Of Negotiation - The Price

3:00 PM By Article Directory

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Elements Of Negotiation - The Price Elements Of Negotiation - The Price

Not all negotiation involves money. You can use your negotiating skills to get the kids to clean the house, after all. Of course, most negotiation outside of the house will have a money element to it, and gathering relevant information about this is crucial to doing your best.

Try to get an idea about why the price is where it is. If you are the one selling, you already have that information, of course. In that case, have enough information ready to present to the other side to justify your pricing. on the other hand. if you are on the buying end, find out how the seller arrived at his price.

Often there are several elements in a large deal that determine the asking price. For example, I once offered an investor a small rental I owned for two different prices. I offered him one price, and the another that was 15% higher. He took the higher price.

Why would he take the higher price? Because the first was for cash. Taking the second option, he bought the property from me with virtually no money down ($ 1,000) on terms that allowed him to have cash flow from day one. I knew he wanted to conserve his cash, and I wanted both the higher price and the high interest I charged him.

The point is to be sure you look at all the factors that go into valuing something, whether it's real estate or a contract for cooking oil. Altering these factors can alter the price dramatically. Learn what you can about anything that might affect price.

If you were to buy a new car, for example, you might want to use one of the online services like Consumer Reports' website, in order to know what the dealer is actually paying for the car. You would also want to see what the dealer cost is for the options. With information like this, you can more effectively negotiate the lowest price, without going so low that they can't say yes (they still need to make a profit).

Effective negotiation doesn't mean always trying for the lowest price possible. If you are contracting with a cleaning service to clean your buildings every week, you may want a decent price, but you want quality work too. In fact, you may want to think about the motivation level and trustworthiness of a vendor that is being chronically underpaid by your company.

Research the numbers, and understand what they mean. It is one of the keys to good negotiation.

F1 2012 will not support Windows XP

Codemasters has announced that F1 2012 for PC will not support Windows XP. Since the game uses DirectX 11, it?ll only support Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. The developer also added that this was also the case with its most recent title, Dirt Showdown.

Although many of the hardcore gamers have moved on to Windows 7, a good chunk of the PC gaming demographic still uses Windows XP. Codemasters is yet to reveal the system requirements for the game.

F1 2012 is scheduled for release on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC this September.

Sharon Will Speak to the Detroit Bankruptcy Attorneys

My best friend Sharon is a single mom to three adorable children. Sharon works very hard every day at a job that does not pay very well. During the past few years, Sharon has managed to incur a lot of debts that she has not been able to repay. This morning, Sharon called me to let me know that she had decided to call and make an appointment to speak with the Detroit Bankruptcy Attorneys. She feels that they will be able to help her.

Asus ET2701INKI-B046C

The Asus ET2701INKI-B046C ($1,399 list) is an all-in-one desktop PC with a built-in 27-inch "full HD 1080p" display. It's a good PC for the home, and it can replace a smallish HDTV in your home if you have HD cable (or satellite) boxes. In addition to the screen, the system has a boatload of multimedia-friendly features like Blu-ray and DTS sound. A next-generation quad-core processor and decent graphics card help the system achieve benchmark scores very close to our latest high-end champ, so it's no surprise that the newest Asus all-in-one claims the Editors' Choice in the midrange all-in-one desktop category.

Design and Features
The ET2701INKI-B046C's design mirrors that of the HDTV-like styling of the previous model, the Asus ET2700INKS-B062C ($1,499 list, 3.5 stars), down to the 27-inch panel and row of I/O ports on the left side. The 27-inch panel dominates the system's looks, so it's a good thing that the display is bright and clear, with vibrant colors. The display is 1,920 by 1,080 (full 1080p), which is fine for watching movies, but for Web page creation and design work, a 2,560 by 1,440 screen?as seen on the high-end all-in-one desktop Editors' Choice Apple iMac 27-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,999 list, 4 stars) or Dell XPS One 27 ($1,999 list, 4.5 stars)?makes better sense. You get more pixel real estate to work with on the Dell One or Apple iMac, which makes a difference if you're creating rather than just enjoying entertainment.

The system's speaker bar is placed below the screen, so that the speakers are at least optimally aimed. Our review unit came with a stylish subwoofer, which helps a little with the bass response. However, since the speakers are so small, it doesn't help a lot, particularly because the system's out of box maximum volume is so low. The ET2701 is okay in a quiet room, but if you work or play in a crowded area, you're better off using a pair of headphones. The HP Omni 27 ($1,249 direct, 4 stars), with its optional subwoofer feels like a Marshall Stack in comparison. The main nit about the subwoofer is the placement of the subwoofer connector: it's on the side of the ET2701 under a hinged door that sticks out when the sub is connected. If Asus had placed the subwoofer jack on the back of the system (or omitted the door entirely), the subwoofer's plug and cable wouldn't look out of place and be so obtrusive.

The included sound software is confusing as well. You can fiddle with the included Realtek HD audio manager software to tailor the sound, but there are several redundant settings in the control panel. One tab in the audio manager is DTS UltraPC II sound enhancement software, but its sliders and buttons can either enhance or counter the settings found in the rest of the control panel. We were able to make the system "louder" than out of box, but only after fiddling with the control panel for about 20 minutes. During the adjustment session, we found sound settings that made the system sound much, much worse (like when one non-obvious setting made the system sound like it was in an echo chamber). The Beats Audio on/off button on the HP Omni 27's keyboard is a lot easier to understand and use.

The ET2701INKI-B046C has fewer I/O ports compared with a tower desktop, but the ports it does have are well balanced. There is a pair of USB 2.0 ports, one of which is occupied by the included USB dongle for the wireless keyboard and mouse. There are two USB 3.0 ports, a VGA-in port, HDMI-in port, Ethernet port, a media card reader, and audio ports.

The system comes with a plethora of shortcuts strewn around the desktop when you boot it up for the first time. It's kind of cluttered, even though most of the programs are Asus-branded (as opposed to third-party trial utilities). It would've been better if these icons were left in the Start menu where they belong.

There is one notable piece of bloatware present: The included Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security package is a 30-day trial, the same as if you had downloaded it for free from the Internet. In contrast, the HP Omni 27 came with a 15-month subscription, a much more palatable length of time.

Performance
Asus ET2701INKI-B046C The ET2701INKI-B046C benefits greatly from its third-generation Intel Core i7-3770S processor and Nvidia GeForce GT 640M discrete graphics. The i7-3770S CPU helped the ET2701INKI-B046C rocket past older all-in-one desktops, especially on the multimedia tests (scoring 1 minute 7 seconds in Handbrake, 2:51 in Photoshop CS5). Older systems like the Apple iMac (which scored 1:18 in Handbrake, 3:17 in CS5) and the HP Omni 27 (which scored 1:28 in Handbrake, 3:31 in CS5) lag behind because of their slower, older 2nd-gen Intel Core i5 processors. The new version of the HP Omni 27-1015t was just behind (scoring 1:09 in Handbrake, 3:03 in CS5), as was the Dell XPS One 27 (which scored 1:09 in Handbrake, 2:53 in CS5). Both the HP 27-1015t and Dell One 27 have faster third-generation Core processors.

The discrete Nvidia GeForce GT 640M graphics in the ET2701INKI-B046C help it garner playable scores on Lost Planet 2 (43 frames per second, or fps) and Crysis (75 fps) at the medium/middle quality settings. However, like most all in ones, you can't push the ET2701INKI-B046C to full quality and 1080p resolution. While not single-frame slideshows, the 16fps and 11 fps scores at the two games are still unplayable. The good news is that at medium quality settings, the ET2701INKI-B046C's gaming scores very close to those of the high-end all-in-one Editors' Choice, the Dell XPS One 27. The one area where the Dell One 27 way outpaces the ET2701INKI-B046C is at PCMark 7 (4,673 points for the Dell vs. 3,512 points for the ET2701INKI-B046C). This is due to the Dell One 27's mSATA cache drive helping out. The Dell will simply feel faster on day-to-day tasks, even though the two are evenly matched on games and multimedia benchmark tests.

And that's the thing that elevates the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C above it's predecessor as well as the HP Omni 27. While the ET2701INKI-B046C can't match the Dell XPS One 27 stat for stat, for example the latter has a much higher-resolution screen, HDMI-in and -out, dual band Wi-Fi, and a TV tuner. The thing is that the ET2701INKI-B046C doesn't have to, since it's $600 cheaper. What the ET2701INKI-B046C does is it far outperform the HP Omni 27 on the benchmark tests, showing that it is more capable on 3D games, and will like take a lot longer to "feel slow" in the long run. The ET2701INKI-B046C is even faster and better at the tests than the newer HP Omni 27-1015t, which lacks features like Blu-ray. Basically, what you have here is a system that performs like a high-end all-in-one desktop, for the price of a midrange version. That easily gives the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C an Editors' Choice award for midrange all-in-one desktop PCs.

Nexus 7 will wake when a magnetic cover is removed (it's an oldie but a goodie)

Nexus 7

So apparently the Nexus 7 tablet has a little magnetic sensor hidden under the display that can trigger the display to turn on. Not exactly a new phenomenon, but interesting because until now, it's a feature that's gone unmentioned.

The way it works is you have a cover or case that also has a magnet inside, and that second magnet lines up with the corresponding spot on the device. Remove the second magnet, and the phone says, "Hey! I'm alive, and it's time to wake up now!"

Again, these are not new. Not now, not with the iPad's Smart Cover. We've been using them long since the bad old days of Windows Mobile. And it's a staple on BlackBerry. (Anyone remember when software could actually screw up this sort of thing?) But it leads us to believe we'll see that feature arise again in the official Nexus 7 case from Google, and probably in the ones from ASUS as well.

There's video after the break if you need videographic proof of this force of nature.

Here's the real question, though: How the hell did iFixit, which can spot the serial number on underside of the world's smaller circuit board, miss this one? Good thing we mentioned the magnetometer in our Nexus 7 review, eh?
