Video: Santelli's Take on Housing

CNBC's Rick Santelli weighs in on whether housing will continue with momentum into 2012, saying "certainly foreclosures is the big issue, but we don't know how much are going to be in the marketplace because banks are sitting on numbers."

NCAA Basketball: Buckeyes Cruise Past Wildcats To Start Big Ten Play

Ohio State has won at least a share of two consecutive Big Ten championships and is favored to win a third. That titlde defense begins tonight in Columbus as the No. 2 rated Buckeyes host nCAA Tournament hopeful Northwestern. The Wildcats are not the typical Northwestern of old. They are trying to reach their first ever NCAA Tournament and already have some solid wins under their belt:

Only their second loss of the season, Northwestern has fared well against a reasonably difficult early slate, winning two of three games against the RPI Top 50. The Wildcats' other defeat, against #7 Baylor, was an entirely non-competitive game, the sole ugly blemish upon their young season. Baylor throttled them, 69-41, led by 6''7 forward Quincy Acy and shooting guard Pierre Jackson, who had 16 points apiece.

Ohio State's offense has struggled with Player of the Year candidate Jared Sullinger battling persistent injuries, and the Buckeyes will have to to play solid defense against the three-pointer to get the win. Northwestern is not afraid to slow the game down with its Princeton offense, a factor that has been big for them in past games with Ohio State.

YEAR IN REVIEW MONTANA: Oil Boom in Canada Brings Megaloads South of the Border

A megaload moves through Montana (photo by Jackie Yamanaka/YPR)

(Billings, MT-YPR) The oil boom in Canada?s Tar Sands field and an oil refinery upgrade brought megaloads?huge shipments of drilling equipment? across Western roads and interstate highways in 2011.

Opponents argue this equipment supports a dirty tar sands oil industry, will destroy public infrastructure, and disrupt scenic and wild landscapes. Proponents counter the megaloads will boost the economy. They add that until consumers no longer drive vehicles or use petroleum-based products, it?s better to buy oil from friendly countries like Canada than from the Middle East.

Imperial Oil and ExxonMobil are seeking permission to move several hundred loads of large processing equipment from the Port of Lewiston in Idaho, through Idaho and neighboring Washington and Montana, to its final destination ? the Kearl oil sands in Alberta, Canada.

Earlier this month, the Idaho Transportation Department temporarily suspended shipments of Imperial Oil/ExxonMobil refinery equipment following a collision with a vehicle. There were no injuries.

Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) Director Timothy Reardon recently gave an update on the Kearl transport project to the interim Revenue and Transportation Legislative Committee (RTC).

Conservation groups and others are fighting movement of the oil sands processing equipment.? Opponents argue MDT should have conducted an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) rather than an Environmental Assessment (EA) in issuing permits to the Imperial Oil/ExxonMobil loads. In Montana, a state district judge granted a preliminary injunction halting the loads earlier this year. District Judge Ray Dayton later modified his order when Imperial Oil/ExxonMobil proposed smaller load sizes, and set a January 6, 2012 hearing date for arguments on a permanent injunction sought by opponents. Reardon, who has been MDT?s lead attorney before being promoted to director in August, expects the judge will instead request a trial for a full hearing on the matter.

Originally, the loads were up to 30 feet tall and weighed more than 500,000 pounds. Because of the size and weight, the companies were seeking to move the loads at night on two-lane roads. Now the companies have basically cut those loads in half and have been traveling on the interstate.

?They?ve moved 80 so far on the interstate and they?ve done so without incident (in Montana),? Reardon told lawmakers during December?s RTC hearing. ?One of the distinctions about using the interstate route that has become apparent is with half-size loads on the interstate, most vehicles can travel 55-60 MPH.?

He adds traveling on the interstate means the passing lane is free for other vehicles to get around the loads.

Reardon told lawmakers the companies have submitted an application to move 300 oversize loads via I-90 and I-15.

A legislator had asked MDT if the state agency had adequately assessed state bridges to make sure they could handle megaloads. Reardon says during the state?s EA of the Kearl Transportation Project, the agency?s engineers ?used their best judgment based on the information at hand to determine that the bridges on the proposed route were sufficient.?

Reardon told lawmakers that after the collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis in 2007, Montana began an aggressive program to inspect all of its bridges. ?They?ve all been found to be structurally safe as far as this route (the Kearl transportation project) is concerned. Our engineers tell me they do not believe there is a risk.?

?They get paid to make decisions about building bridges and telling us if they think they are going to fail when they get a heavy load on it,? Reardon says. ?And so far, they tell me those bridges are sound.?

Reardon says at this point, however, none of the Imperial Oil/ExxonMobil loads have moved any of its loads on any of those bridges.

Another megaload shipment that received attention in Montana in 2011 was a proposal by ConocoPhillips to move four coke drum shipments from the Port of Lewiston in Idaho to the company?s oil refinery in Billings.

Protesters met the ConocoPhillips megaloads in February as crews traveled down a Missoula street.? It was the only Montana community to hold a protest rally.

The ConocoPhillips megaload moving through a Helena intersection in February 2011

In Helena, a few onlookers watched. At the final destination in Billings, crews were greeted with coffee and donuts in April.

Because of the size, the loads were split into two. The final load arrived at ConocoPhillips refinery in August. The final shipment was delayed by several weeks because of spring flooding across portions of Central and south central Montana.

CX

CX (free to $19.99 per month) is a cloud-based syncing and storage back-up solution, similar to the well-known Dropbox, that gives you access to your files from virtually any Internet-connected device. CX offers free downloadable software that works seamlessly on Windows and Mac, as well as free apps for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Where native apps aren't supported?and they're notably missing from Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Linux?a straightforward and responsive website, CX.com, stands in just fine. In fact, in many ways, I prefer the online dashboard to the apps because it supports a few additional features not found in the software, such as threaded comments between collaborators.

Our Editors' Choices among file syncing services?and we have two?are Dropbox and SugarSync, which both edge past CX by a hair, mostly because they support Android, BlackBerry, and Linux, which CX leaves behind. SugarSync goes so far as to make apps for Windows Mobile and Symbian, too. In terms of free space offered, CX doubles the impressive 5GB that SugarSync provides, but CX's 10GB giveaway is stated as being a limited-time offer. Who knows how long it will last?

Other services PCMag has reviewed, Syncplicity and SafeSync for Business by Trend Micro, remain in the middle of the pack. SafeSync offers a great service, though its utilitarian website looks dull compared to CX's sexy design. And Syncplicity works fine but costs more than the others and doesn't offer anything notable or unique.

Setting Up CX
Getting a CX account takes little more than a trip to CX.com and signing up with an email address and password. New users start out with a generous 10GB of space, although CX states that this amount is = a limited-time offer. Still, it's absolutely worth snagging if you're in the market for a syncing service, as it doubles SugarSync's 5GB, which is itself more than double the 2GB offered by both Dropbox and Syncplicity.

Like most of its competitors, CX rewards you with even more free space if you recruit friends to the service. Even without that bonus, however, 10GB can easily accommodate very large files, like movies and high-resolution photos, and still leave you with plenty of room to spare for text-based documents, music, and more.

CX's online dashboard, which is where most users start their experience, is extremely easy to understand and navigate. The elegant online dashboard shows a list of recent activity, all time-stamped. Tabs for files, groups (for collaborating), favorites, and your profile are as straightforward as they seem. If you're new to file-syncing, the website is by far the simplest place to get started syncing and backing up your files.

A small box labeled Your Plan shows how much space you have available versus how much you're using in the form of a bar graph, MB count, and percentage. This crucial information should be front and center in every syncing service, and CX wisely puts it on just about every page on its site.

Strangest Love: Britney Spears Leaks New-Old Song!

Perhaps taking a cute from Lady Gaga's "Stuck on F---in' You", Britney Spears has released an old song of hers entitled “Strangest Love." Old to her, new to us!

While it's rumored to be a holdover from the future Mrs. Jason Trawick’s In The Zone glory days of 2003, it was left off that album for a reason. It's fairly tame.

Still, it's a decent if not amazing ballad, and a nice addition to Britney’s catalog. Listen to Spears' leaked track and tell us what you think in the survey below:

Eight Ways To Go Viral

swine flu virusWhat do Facebook, LinkedIn, Youtube, Dropbox and Skype have in common? Except for being ridiculously successful, they all enjoyed a strong viral effect that helped accelerate their growth. How did they do that? Here's the thing; most people assume that these companies grew by pure word of mouth. Well, that's only half of the story. The other half is that they deliberately built viral features into their products that helped spread the word. Let me explain.

Avastin May Help Some With Ovarian Cancer: Studies (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 28 (HealthDay News) -- Two new studies suggest that the drug Avastin may lengthen progression-free survival by about four months for women with ovarian cancer.

What isn't clear yet is whether adding Avastin (bevacizumab) will make a difference in overall survival. One study suggested it would, while the other study didn't find a difference in overall survival between two treatment groups.

"The bottom-line results are a 28 percent reduction in disease progression with patients on continued bevacizumab compared to the standard treatment group. There was a 3.8 month median difference in progression-free survival," said Dr. Robert Burger, author of one of the studies and director of the Women's Cancer Center at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

"We still have to fine-tune or optimize this sort of new paradigm of treatment. This regimen [chemotherapy plus continued Avastin] could be considered a frontline option for patients with advanced ovarian cancer. However, there are some risks to the treatment, and we haven't shown an impact on overall survival. But, in the European trial, they saw an overall survival benefit," Burger added.

"I think the difficult reality is that these studies are not clear-cut," said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society. "The improvements in progression are modest and appear to be greater for women who have worse disease. What this ultimately means is that it's absolutely important for doctors treating women with advanced ovarian cancer to read these studies very carefully so they know who may benefit and the risks of treatment, and to counsel their patients very carefully before moving forward with Avastin treatment," Lichtenfeld explained.

"This is not a case where treatment can be initiated in every woman. The benefits for many women are modest at best," he added.

Results of both studies are published in the Dec. 29 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The studies were funded by Roche and Genentech (a Roche-owned company). Burger said Genentech played no role in the study design or analysis.

Burger's study included almost 1,900 women with newly diagnosed stage 3 or stage 4 epithelial ovarian cancer. All of the women had undergone surgery to remove as much cancer as possible. They were then randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: standard treatment including paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy; the Avastin-initiation group that included the standard chemotherapy and Avastin for the second through sixth treatment cycle; and the Avastin maintenance group that included chemotherapy plus Avastin for up to the 22nd treatment cycle.

The average progression-free survival was 10.3 months for the standard group, 11.2 months for the Avastin-initiation group and just over 14 months for the Avastin-maintenance group. There was no difference in overall survival for the three groups.

The European study included more than 1,500 women with varying types of ovarian cancer. Most had epithelial ovarian cancer, but the severity ranged from early-stage disease to stage 4. Seventy percent of the women enrolled in this study had stage 3 or stage 4 cancer.

The women were randomly assigned to receive either standard chemotherapy treatment or chemotherapy plus Avastin for up to 12 cycles of chemotherapy. The dose of Avastin used in this trial was half of what was used in Burger's trial.

Progression-free survival was 20.3 months for the standard group and 21.8 months for the standard therapy plus Avastin. In women who were considered at high risk for progression, the progression-free survival was 14.5 months on standard therapy and 18.1 months with the addition of Avastin. Overall survival in high-risk women was 28.8 months for women on standard chemotherapy and 36.6 months for standard therapy plus Avastin.

High blood pressure is a common side effect of Avastin, but Burger said that in most cases, it can be controlled with blood pressure medication. Another serious side effect associated with Avastin is bowel perforation, which means a hole opens in the bowel wall. This side effect occurred in fewer than 3 percent of women treated, but occurred twice as much in women taking Avastin.

Published reports peg the cost of the drug at somewhere between $4,000 and $9,000 a month, depending on co-pay assistance that's available from Genentech, Avastin's manufacturer. In a previous study, another research group looked at the cost effectiveness of treatment with Avastin in Burger's trial and found the standard treatment arm of the trial cost $2.5 million. Treating the Avastin-initiation group cost $21.4 million and the Avastin-maintenance group cost $78.3 million, according to the study, which was published in the March 7 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. And, most of those costs came directly from the cost of the medication. Those researchers concluded that Avastin was not a cost-effective medication.

"We don't want cost to be a deciding factor, but for many women with ovarian cancer, cost may be a significant factor, and it needs to be weighed in the equation," Lichtenfeld said.

Avastin isn't approved in the United States for the treatment of ovarian cancer, so some insurance companies may balk at paying for it. Plus, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration pulled Avastin's approval for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer in November because the FDA found the risks of the drug outweighed its modest benefits. Avastin is still approved for the treatment of some types of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer in the United States.

However, the drug was just approved by the European Union for use in ovarian cancer in combination with chemotherapy.

Cops: Mom, son rescued after Facebook post

A Utah woman used Facebook to seek help after she and her 17-month-old son were held hostage at a residence for nearly five days, police said.

Police Sgt. Jon Arnold said the woman hid in a closet with a laptop to post her plea for help on the social networking website, saying she and her son would be "dead by morning" if they were not rescued.

The post prompted someone to call police, who went to the home to check on the woman's welfare.

"Facebook was her only outlet that she had at the home," Arnold said. "It just happened that she was able to use it."

Police arrested Troy Reed Critchfield, 33, and booked him into jail Saturday for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, forcible sodomy, aggravated assault, domestic violence, child abuse, animal cruelty and other charges.

Salt Lake County Jail records show Critchfield initially refused to let police in the house.

The papers say the woman shook her head to indicate "No," when officers asked if she was OK.

After police separated the couple, the woman told officers she and her child had not been allowed to leave the home and that she repeatedly had been hit, choked and sexually abused over a period of nearly five days. Jail records show the woman also claimed Critchfield had taken her cell phone and the phone of a disabled child also in the home.

"She claims that any time she went to go to a door, he physically assaulted her," Arnold told The Associated Press on Monday.

Story: Man jailed after Facebooking a store burglary

The woman had bruises and other physical injuries consistent with allegations, but refused to go to a hospital for treatment, he said.

She also told officers that Critchfield grabbed the boy's arms and treated him roughly, while also refusing to let her feed the family dog, jail papers state.

Critchfield remained in jail on Monday. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney.

Utah State Court records show that in December 2010 Critchfield pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault and obstruction of justice charges in connection with a domestic violence incident.

A judge sentenced Critchfield to a prison term of five years, but suspended the punishment for a 120-day jail term and three years of probation.

Prince Philip in hospital as royals mark Christmas (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's royal family gathered Sunday to celebrate Christmas with one notable absence ? Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip, who remains hospitalized following a heart procedure.

The 90-year-old prince is recovering from having a coronary stent put in after doctors determined that the heart pains which sent him to the hospital on Friday were caused by a blocked artery.

Buckingham Palace said "he's in good spirits" and family members will visit Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, in the hospital after lunch.

The palace has said the rest of the family's Christmas schedule will go ahead as planned ? including a traditional morning service at St. Mary Magdalene Church on the queen's sprawling Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

The huge crowds that gathered outside the church got an early peek when the royals made a quick private visit to the church ahead of the services. Less than two hours later, they were back ? in different clothes ? for the Christmas service.

The Queen arrived first ? dressed in a lavender-colored coat and hat ? in a royal limousine, leading the way into the church. Her oldest son, Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, trailed behind.

Prince Harry walked in with his brother William and new sister-in-law Kate_ now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Kate, whose style is closely watched around the world and sends dresses flying off the shelves in Britain, wore an eggplant-colored coat and matching hat.

Among the other royals present was the queen's granddaughter, Zara Philips, who was joined by her new husband Mike Tindall, an English rugby player.

After the service, children lined up to give bouquets of flowers to the queen. Thanking each well-wisher, the queen then handed the bouquets to her granddaughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

The royal family then traveled back to the house for lunch, an integral part of their celebration.

Another key part of the royal family's Christmas festivities is the queen's annual message to the nation, which this year will focus on family and community.

The queen has made a prerecorded Christmas broadcast on radio since 1952 and on television since 1957. She writes the speeches herself, and the broadcasts mark the rare occasion on which the queen voices her own opinion without government consultation.

CFO Coach: Stories and Pauses

I recently read an article about how to ramp up public speaking skills.? Two of the suggestions ? emotional stories and pregnant pauses ? jumped out at me as two very effective strategies I use in coaching my clients through the job search and salary negotiating process. ?
?
I?m a big believer in differentiation as a way of standing out from the competition in a job search or as a top three candidate in the interview. The effective use of stories and pauses can certainly differentiate you from the pack. Let?s take a closer look.

Emotional Stories

Granted, the ?emotional stories? one delivers in a speech are not the same as the ?emotional stories? one offers in an interview (or in his marketing documents), but there is a connection: emotion.

What a company cares about is whether or not you can solve its problems, challenges, issues and/or situations. Its emotion is PAIN. When a company is in pain, and you are the person who convinces them ? through stories ? that you can take away their pain, you have moved from the pack to pretty much standing alone. And perhaps even standing on a pedestal.

Stories take you from saying ?yes, I did that,? or ?yes, I did those exact kinds of things,? to walking the talk. I call the strategy ?C-A-R+SI.? Challenge - Action - Result + Strategic Impact ... and it is powerful, and differentiating, positioning.

In marketing documents (resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile), stories also work well. In our nanosecond world of communication, stories-backed-by-facts of how you solved problems quickly resonate in an initial scan. In an interview, getting down in the dirt (how really bad were those problems?) can leave the interviewer trying to figure out how quickly he can bring you on board without worrying about what it will cost him to get you.

Responsibilities and duties don?t sell. Facts, in and of themselves, won?t close the deal. But emotional stories can often accomplish both.

Pregnant Pauses

Is there anything more uncomfortable than silence during a conversation? Have you been on the receiving end of that lull in a conversation where your brain goes into overdrive trying to think of what to say next... and soon?

Used well, pregnant pauses are an effective salary negotiating strategy.

In anticipation of his upcoming salary negotiations, one of my clients began practicing the use of pregnant pauses on his co-workers and his children. He drove them crazy. And he became very skilled at simply remaining silent when he didn?t get the answer he wanted.

Fear that the top candidate has just now been offended by the salary offered - or - just the discomfort that silence creates is often too much pressure for an unskilled negotiator. Before as few as 15 seconds of silence has passed, he might find himself upping the ante in order to bridge that uncomfortable silence.

The next time one of your team members or direct reports or children offers you an answer you don?t want or which might not be entirely true, respond with a slow, thoughtful r-e-a-l-l-y, and then be silent. Start counting to 30 (to yourself of course) and just see what happens.

Emotional stories and pregnant pauses just might become your new best strategies.

Golf tourney raises scholarship funds for Parker School

MEDIA RELEASE

Parker School?s 9th annual Fairways & Friends Scholarship Golf Tournament took place Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Hualalai Resort.

A total of 54 golfers turned out for the event from which all proceeds benefit the school?s financial aid and scholarship programs.

Participants enjoyed playing 18 holes on the Hualalai course, followed by a reception at Ronnie?s Garden at the resort provided by the Four Seasons Hualalai?s Beach Tree Restaurant, complete with a hosted bar, entertainment, and prizes.

First place went to the team of Jeff Richardson and Gary Davis, both from Waimea.

Parker School provides a college-preparatory experience in a small-school setting where K-12 students develop academically while exploring their individual talents. More than 50 percent of these students receive financial assistance every year, and this year?s tournament earned more than $14,000 for Parker?s financial aid and scholarship programs.

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai general manager and Parker School parent, Robert Whitfield, said, ?It was the second year I have played in the tournament and it was tremendous fun. The camaraderie among the players is great whether you are a scratch golfer or a duffer.?

Parker School is grateful to the following sponsors and donors for helping make the golf tournament a success: Hualalai Resort and K & G Architects (title sponsors); Four Seasons Resort Hualalai and the Beach Tree Restaurant (reception sponsor); Big Island Country Club, Waikoloa Beach Golf Course, Kings? Gusty Santa Ana winds hit Southern California

A 100 year- old Pine Tree came down in the high winds this morning on Burritt Way near New York Av in LaCresenta, Ca. The latest round of gusty winds to hit California toppled trucks and trees and fanned a small brush fire on Thursday.

Gusts of Santa Ana winds topped 70 mph in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles, but by midafternoon the region had escaped without a repeat of the millions of dollars of damage and huge blackouts caused by hurricane-force blasts three weeks earlier.

The brush fire was reported in a rural foothill canyon area near Santa Paula, said Ventura County fire Capt. Ron Oatman.

The blaze, believed to have started in a grove of avocado trees, spread across 12 to 15 acres but was not threatening any homes, he said. Several fire trucks and bulldozers were dispatched.

The National Weather Service said the Santa Anas, generated by a strong high-pressure system over the Great Basin, would continue through today in Southern California, but no "red flag" warnings for fire danger would be issued because fuel conditions were not at critical levels.

Gusts faster than 70 mph were recorded at Warm Springs and Chilao in the Angeles National Forest.

Several tractor-trailers blew over on wind-prone routes in the inland region east of Los Angeles and video cameras recorded a huge tree in Glendale losing its hold on the earth and collapsing across a street. Another tree fell on a residential building in Santa Ana, KCAL Channel 9 reported.

Weather was also blustery in other parts of California.

During a Nov. 30 Southern California windstorm with gusts approaching 100 mph, trees were toppled, power poles and traffic light standards snapped, homes and cars were damaged, and electricity was cut to nearly 650,000 homes and business.

Most of that damage occurred east of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley. No injuries were reported amid the blizzard of flying debris, but some homes lost power for a week, triggering complaints against utilities.

On Thursday, work crews were on standby in Pasadena, where the last windstorm covered nearly all of the 325 miles of city streets in debris that still is being cleared.

"It's a big, big job," city spokeswoman Ann Erdman said. "It's slow and steady. Crews continue to work night and day getting it done."

By early afternoon no damage had been reported.

"We're anticipating some gusts from time to time in Pasadena but they absolutely will not even begin to hold a candle to what happened here three weeks ago," Erdman said.

Still, she added, "we do encourage all our residents to be prepared, batten down the hatches."

Shootings in Mexico's Veracruz kill 16

At least 11 people were killed by an armed gang on Thursday in the Mexican Gulf coast state of Veracruz, where drug-related violence flared this autumn, before five gunmen were shot dead by security forces.

A spokeswoman for the state government told local television the gunmen killed four people in the small town of El Higo then attacked three buses on a highway about 60 miles southwest of the port of Tampico, killing seven others.

Five armed men were killed in a shootout with security forces, the spokeswoman said.

Story: Mexico disbands entire police force in top port of Veracruz

Mexican authorities in October blamed a surge of killings in the city of Veracruz ? some 300 miles south of Tampico ? on a group linked to the country's most powerful drug lord, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman.

Guzman has been fighting a turf war with the violent Zetas cartel, which authorities say controls Veracruz.

More than 45,000 people have been killed since President Felipe Calderon launched a war on drug cartels in late 2006.

Limited, ultra, deluxe: The box set goes beyond (AP)

Musical box sets, encapsulating a portion or all of an artist's catalog, are hardly a new trend. They've been around for decades.

But as labels begin to search for more sources of income, they're increasingly using yesterday's hits to help today's bottom line, from multi-disc deluxe editions of your favorite old album to over-the-top collections of obscurities complete with cool little tchotchkes.

And they're also reaching new heights in pricing. Love U2 beyond measure? There's the new "Achtung Baby" uber-deluxe edition, a limited, numbered box set that originally retailed for $650. It includes six CDs, four DVDs, a new documentary, a magnetic puzzle box, five clear 7-inch vinyl singles, 16 art prints, an 84-page book, a sticker sheet and a pair of Bono's bug-eyed sunglasses, among many other things.

Tony Bennett fans can own his entire recorded output ? more than 1,000 of his songs spread across 73 discs and three DVDs ? in "Tony Bennett: The Complete Collection," original price around $400. Elvis fans willing to pay the $750 list price for "The Complete Elvis Presley Masters" 30-disc set last year took home more than 800 songs ? every master released in chronological order plus more than 100 rarities ? and a book by Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick.

Josh Walker, an assistant manager at Nashville record store Grimey's New and Preloved Music, recently sold about 20 copies of The Beach Boys' "The Smile Sessions" box set (he was among the buyers). Walker says the real gems in the box-set world are the ones that come reimagined and packing truly over-the-top rare items.

He calls the Beach Boys set, named Spin Magazine's reissue of the year, "beautiful." Inside there's the double-disc set of the original music, three more CDs of all the sessions with Brian Wilson orchestrating the music, a vinyl copy of the original album, two 7-inch single replicas and a coffee table book with Wilson's insights.

"The packaging is above and beyond," Walker said. "It looks exactly like a storefront and it's got this little window and it's inset with these little people selling smiles. So from the get-go, the package is nice."

Single albums getting the box set and deluxe reissue treatment like "Smile" are the biggest trend. You can get the expanded edition of The Rolling Stones' "Some Girls" for around $150, too. Similarly priced releases this year included Nirvana's 20th anniversary "Nevermind" box set and Pink Floyd's "immersion" set for "The Dark Side of the Moon."

But these don't even come close to the most elaborate items out there. Legacy Recordings, which put out the Presley and Bennett box sets, also released the $20,000 "Fifteen Minutes: Homage to Andy Warhol." Creator Jeff Gordon is quick to point out the deluxe edition, which includes three CDs, four vinyl LPs and 17 signed original silkscreens, is a unique creation for art-world collectors. Only 85 were made and they are selling, Gordon said (a cheaper standard edition goes for $600).

He solicited artists, musicians and former acquaintances of Warhol's to create a piece of art and a sound recording to accompany it. Patti Smith read a poem. Another recorded contribution includes a 40-minute conversation between two of Warhol's friends and former employees talking about their old mentor.

The originals are now on display at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. The fact Legacy Recordings, Sony Music Entertainment's catalog division, was interested in the project indicates to Gordon there are many possibilities out there for cross-pollination and even expanding the form.

"I think there are a lot of people out there who appreciate something like this," said Gordon, who served as both a producer and curator on the project. "In a couple of years, you'll see these things going for $40,000, $50,000 and $60,000."

The trend of pricier box sets seems incongruent with the musical landscape: Many people buy their music digitally, and downloaded singles now rule over albums. When an act's catalog can be downloaded in moments, who is purchasing these lavish collector's editions?

Rising country star Eric Church counts himself among those fans. His favorite box set chronicles the entire history of seminal rock group The Band, complete with previously unreleased tracks, live cuts and covers he'd never heard before.

"I love (box sets), but I'm old school and probably in the minority," Church said. "I like those kind of things. I still like to go back and listen to albums in their entirety. I love obscure tracks, live tracks, `Live at the Fillmores.' I love that stuff. ... I feel like it's a great experience for fans, especially musicheads, to get their hands on stuff like that."

Billy Joel likes the way his new 16-disc box set, "The Complete Albums Collection," presents his career. However, he has some qualms about the steep price.

"I don't know who can afford to buy a box set for $290 or whatever it costs," Joel said in a recent interview. "It's not exactly a bargain. It's a lot of money. It is expensive, especially for people who are used to downloading something for 99 cents. You compare this to that, and you're in a different league all together. But I'm just glad that the original art form is available so people don't just think of me in terms of the top 40 hits. ... I like my music to be heard in the context that it was originally conceived."

(Sony does have its own website, Popmarket.com, where they offer box sets at a reduced price for a limited amount of time ? sort of like Groupon for music).

Elvis Costello recently panned his new set, "The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook," on his website: It's listed on Amazon.com for more than $250. He said "the price appears to be either a misprint or a satire."

He told fans the pieces of the set will be available individually at a much lower price in 2012, then took the "unusual step" of suggesting the Louis Armstrong "Ambassador of Jazz" set instead. It will be cheaper, he noted in a blog post.

"Frankly the music is vastly superior," he wrote.

Rich Greenbaum, a record collector, frequent reviewer on Amazon.com and a 56-year-old school counselor from West Sacramento, Calif., loves finding new sets, but doesn't love the extras that are starting to drive up prices.

"I'm not interested in the fluff," Greenbaum says. He cites as an example Pink Floyd's new "immersion box set" for its classic album "The Dark Side of the Moon," which comes with marbles, a scarf and coasters.

"Sure, it's got the triangle with the rainbow through it (the logo)," Greenbaum said of the extras. "But I would've traded that any day for a double disc of a Pink Floyd concert featuring `Dark Side.'"
