One Good Earbud Might Be All You Need

Older readers may remember the precursor to modern earbuds. It was a single earbud that came in one color — medical-aid off-white — and had a stiff, weak cable ending in the familiar 3.5m jack. It was designed for use with battery-operated transistor radios, and was most often used by football-crazy men to listen furtively [...]

'Touch' Preview: Kiefer Sutherland's Martin Learns How To Communicate With His Son (VIDEO)

Hoping to recreate the anticipation and buzz that helped make "Glee" a breakout hit a few seasons back by previewing the series a few months before its official debut, Fox offered potential viewers a sneak preview of "Touch" (Wed., 9 p.m. EST on Fox) after the Aspen auditions of "American Idol." The actual series premieres Monday, March 19 at 9 p.m. EST, after "Alcatraz" finishes its inaugural run.

In this premiere, viewers were introduced to Jacob Bohm, an 11-year old boy diagnosed with autism. It looks like the situation is far more complex than that, which is to be expected from a series created by Tim Kring ("Heroes"). Kiefer Sutherland plays his bewildered father, who's been struggling to take care of and connect with his son since his wife's death in the World Trade Center on 9/11.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw rounds out the core team as the social worker brought in to assess Jacob after his third trip atop a radio tower. She found herself pulled into the mythology when she started to see that Jacob was using numbers to communicate, seeing patterns in the numbers that connect the world and everyone in it. Danny Glover provides support as an expert on children with an affinity to numbers.

The premiere featured a convoluted group of people around the world who had no reason to be connected. But either through happenstance, or the subtle manipulations of Jacob, their lives all touched by the end of the hour, and in doing so they each found an improvement in their situation. Jacob can see the pattern, and perhaps then can see a bit of the future, but can he manipulate it as well.

Check out Maureen Ryan's thoughts on this sneak preview of "Touch," and come back Monday, March 19th at 9 p.m. EST for the series premiere.

Reactions to the State of the Union by Obama (AP)

Reaction to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address:

___

"No feature of the Obama presidency has been sadder than its constant efforts to divide us, to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others."_ Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels.

___

"The greatest priority for Congress is creating jobs, so I was glad to hear President Obama address this as a major priority of his. I strongly agree that we need to focus on strengthening our economy for the long haul so that we don't continue to experience boom-and-bust economic cycles where the schemes of a wealthy few devastate the lives of millions of middle class families." _Rep. Gene Green, D-Texas.

___

"Tonight will mark another chapter in the misguided policies of the last three years_ and the failed leadership of one man." ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

___

"The president is correct, we cannot go back to an economy based on sending American jobs overseas, allowing bad debt to accrue and creating accounting rules that show profits where none actually exist. The American dream is at stake, and we must make certain it is passed on to the next generation of Americans." _Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md.

___

"I'm actually very disturbed by the speech tonight. The president is on the verge of committing economic malpractice."_ Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

___

"There was a lot of common sense and even more common ground in tonight's address. We shouldn't have to wait for another year or another election to act like it. Tax reform, energy security, infrastructure and jobs matter to all of us and we're so much closer on these issues than the shrillness of our politics pretends we are." _Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

___

"The president tonight outlined a laundry list of popular programs without regard to what they cost and his own record in office. ... He has failed to deliver on economic growth promises, has squandered $800 billion in stimulus funds and vetoed jobs and affordable domestic energy bills passed by Congress. What is clear is that he is pursuing a partisan class-warfare agenda aimed at dividing the American people." _Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.

Sergio Mendes says 'Rio' sequel likely (AP)

NEW YORK ? Sergio Mendes, who scored an Oscar nomination for his song "Real In Rio," says the animated film will most likely have a sequel.

Mendes said "Rio" director Carlos Saldanha may want to tie the sequel to the 2014 World Cup, which will take place in Brazil.

"I think the plan is for the movie to come three or four months before the World Cup," Mendes said Tuesday afternoon.

"Fox has been talking about (it) and it looks like it's going to happen," he continued. "We're going to have a meeting I think next week and Carlos is coming to town to tell us the story, and it looks like it's a go."

Fox didn't immediately respond to an email request seeking comment on the possibility of a sequel.

Mendes and Saldanha are from Brazil. Mendes said creating music for the film ? about birds adventuring to Rio de Janeiro with the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway ? was special "because that's my hometown."

Mendes shares his nomination with Siedah Garrett and Carlinhos Brown. He said he's not feeling pressure to create new music for the "Rio" sequel following his Oscar nod.

"I take one thing at a time," he said. "Right now I'm celebrating."

(AP) ? Some of the world's top CEOs are admitting that capitalism is worsening inequalities, but they say it's better than any alternative.

The defensive salvos by chief executives kicked off talks at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort of Davos on Wednesday. Europe's debt crisis and a looming slowdown in the developed world are casting a cloud over this year's gathering of 2,600 elite business and political leaders.

"Capitalism may be the worst form of systems, except for every other system," said David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle Group, the Washington-based global asset management firm.

With protesters camped at an igloo near the snowy meeting venue, pressure is on the VIPs at this year's forum to take workers' fears into account as they discuss the world's economic problems. The Occupy movement and other protests have drawn global attention to anger over inequality, stubbornly high unemployment in many areas, and increasing poverty.

Those from the corporate world shifted some blame onto governments.

Reform is "not just about corporations and greed. It's about decision-making," said Alcatel-Lucent CEO Ben Verwaayen. "Why does it take Europe (and its leaders) two years to come to a conclusion that they knew they had to face anyway?"

He didn't elaborate but appeared to be referring to the acknowledgment of the severity of the crisis and need for bold action, and the leaders' decision to bring economic management of countries that use the euro closer together.

Brian Moynihan, CEO of Bank of America, which was forced to back down from plans to start charging a $5 debit card fee after protests by Occupy and others, said banks have "done a lot" to reduce excesses and said that boom and bust cycles are a part of the capitalist structure.

But, others argued that the process is not inevitable ? and that government should take a stronger role in regulating how companies do business.

The chief of the International Trade Union Confederation, Sharan Burrow, said "we've lost a moral compass" and said that if governments don't invest in social protections now, "nobody will like the social unrest that will follow."

The CEO of accounting giant Deloitte, Joe Echevarria, talked about developing "compassionate capitalism."

"You're going to have to deal with regulation ? balancing the need to protect society along with stifling growth," he told The Associated Press in an interview at Davos. "I think that has to manifest itself through the choices that governments and businesses make."

While the bigwigs debated at Davos, key Greek bondholders were holding closed-door meetings in Paris to discuss how ? and whether ? to continue talks central to Europe's debt crisis, a person close to the bondholders said.

Later Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel may chart her course for Europe's crisis in her keynote speech at the Davos forum.

Surveys ahead of the meeting showed pessimism among world CEOs and plunging levels of public trust in business and government leaders, feeding the overall sense of fragility in the U.S. and European economies, and concerns that it will bring the whole world's economy down.

China's 'Year of the Dragon' baby boom: A guide (The Week)

New York ? The Chinese new year just began this week, but the rush to have babies under the culture's luckiest zodiac sign has been underway for months

China is in the midst of a baby-making boom, as couples try to ensure that their children are born during the Year of the Dragon, which began Monday. The dragon is considered the most auspicious zodiac sign in Chinese culture. Once reserved for the emperor, it is believed to bring strength and good luck. Here, a brief guide to the coming wave of "dragon babies":

Why is the Year of the Dragon so lucky?
Eleven of the 12 zodiac symbols in Chinese culture are animals ? the dragon is the only one that is a mythical creature. That's one of the reasons it's so lucky, and that's why the state news agency Xinhua says China is expecting a 5 percent jump in the number of babies born in 2012. Boys, especially, are said to be destined for success and wealth if they're born under the sign.

SEE MORE: China vs. Harry Potter

?

So Chinese parents are scheduling their pregnancies accordingly?
They sure are. The math is easy enough to figure out: Parents have to get pregnant by May 2 of this year to squeeze in their due date before Feb. 9, 2013, when the Year of the Dragon ends, and the less auspicious Year of the Snake begins. Once the lunar calendar turns over, the baby boom is expected to come to a screeching halt. "The dragon baby boom seems unlikely to have a significant impact on the total fertility rates in the long run,'' Dr. Zhang Yanxia tells the BBC.

How else will this affect China?
Infertility clinics are bracing for a spike in women seeking in vitro fertilization treatment during the coming year, says Dr. Chen Shee-Uan, director of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the National Taiwan University Hospital.?And parents are sparing no expense to prepare for their dragon babies. As a result, nannies in Beijing have been able to double their rates, and "beds in the Chinese capital's Maternity Hospital are booked until August," says Ian MacKinnon in Britain's Telegraph. And the effects won't end there. The baby boomlet means all those dragon babies destined for such greatness will soon be locked in fierce competition for spots in China's best schools, as the dragon babies of the year 2000 are now.

Gregoire names business bigwigs as UW regents | Strange ...

Gov. Chris Gregoire on Tuesday named the Alaska Airlines CEO Bill Ayer and Boeing executive Pat Shanahan as new members of the University of Washington Board of Regents, and reappointed Tacoma business leader Herb Simon to the board.

Gregoire

Appointment as a UW Regent is considered the most prestigious post that a governor can bestow.? It also comes with work.? Simon served as board president during selection of new UW President Michael Young.

Ayer has served as CEO of Alaska Airlines and the Alaska Air Group since 2002.? He chairs the Puget Sound Energy board and is on the UW Business Advisory Board.? Ayer earned a masters degree in business from the UW.

Shanahan is vice president and general manager for airplane programs at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.? He formerly served as vice president for missile defense systems with the company.? Shanahan is a UW alumnus in mechanical engineering.

Simon is co-founder of Simon Johnson LLC, an investment company focusing on real estate and capital venture projects.? He is a longtime generous donor to Democratic candidates.

In naming the Regents, Gov. Gregoire stated:? ?The University of Washington is consistently ranked one of the top research universities in the world, and I have every intention of keeping it that way.?

The University of Washington sustained a $207 million (32.5 percent) state funding cut for the 2011-13 biennium.? The state?s premier university has, in the last few years, lost half of its state funding ? money that sustains the UW?s core undergraduate curriculum.

In 1990, the state supplied an estimated 82 percent of the $17,000 a year it cost to put a student through the University of Washington.? Two decades later, after a string of tuition hikes, students pay 70 percent of the bill and the state only 30 percent.

The cost of everything has gone up since 1990, but state spending on public higher education is almost exactly what it was with a decade remaining in the 20th Century.

PrimeSense Demos A Gesture-Based Next-Gen TV Interface

We've all seen the Kinect, or at least heard about its wonders. Well, the same company that hooked up Microsoft during "Project Natal" development has showed off some pretty wonderful technology at CES last week. It uses a 3D camera on top of your TV to let you interact with your television through gestures. To be honest, it looks a lot like any touchscreen interface you're already used to (with similar transitions and gestures) but you just happen to be 10 feet away from the screen.

Turtle Beach XP400 wireless gaming headset hands-on

Turtle Beach announced a duo of new XBOX 360 and PS3 gaming headsets on day one of CES, and we were able to spend a bit of time with one of them, the XP400, on the show floor. It's Turtle Beach's flagship gaming headset, featuring adjustable Dolby 5.1 virtual surround sound, a non-AD2P dual-pairing Bluetooth radio for picking up phone calls during gaming sessions, a 15 hour rechargeable battery and dual-band 2.4/5GHZ built-in WiFi.

The actual over-the-ear pieces have a much better layout from previous models, though there are almost as many buttons as there are on the controller you'd be wielding -- with volume up / down, chat volume up / down, mute, Bluetooth pairing, limiter button and tone buttons. The included dual-band WiFi adapter that connects to your gaming console of choice is small and pretty minimalistic in design. The adjustable surround angles feature seems useful but we can't help but to feel it's a bit gimmicky -- we have a hard time figuring out which setting is better. One feature that we really like is the new Limiter function, which allows you to keep the volume relatively high to listen for those footsteps (lower in volume) but won't blow your ear drums out when a RPG rocket (explosion-like volume levels) hits you in the face. The sound was also crisp and loud as we completed our spec-op mission at the Turtle Beach gaming booth, where the headset's noise-blocking abilities proved to be particularly handy. Hit up the gallery below for a close look at the $220 gaming headset set to be available this quarter.

Joe Pollicino contributed to this report.

Ravens head to New England, Texans going home (AP)

BALTIMORE ? The Baltimore Ravens couldn't be beaten at home this season, an accomplishment that earned them a trip to a place that's has long been torturous for visiting teams.

Baltimore secured a berth in the AFC championship game by defeating the Houston Texans 20-13 on Sunday. The Ravens' first home playoff win since 2000 gave them a 9-0 record at M&T Bank Stadium this season.

Now they're heading to Foxborough, Mass., for a Sunday matchup with the top-seeded New England Patriots, who improved to 8-1 at home with a 45-10 rout of the Denver Broncos on Saturday night.

Baltimore is 1-6 all-time against New England, but that one win was a 33-14 rout in the 2009 playoffs.

"We've gone out there and played before," said Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, who threw two touchdown passes against Houston. "We have won in New England. They are one of the teams, like us, that's tough to beat at home. We know how tough it is to go into a place like that, a place like here, and win a football game. So we're going to have to make sure we prepare well all week and bring our A-game up there."

The Ravens didn't have their A-game going against the Texans. They had almost as many punts (nine) as first downs (11), got only 80 yards from Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice (60 on the ground, 20 through the air) and scored three points over the final 46 minutes.

"I would anticipate, against the team we're about to play, you have to do a better job offensively in terms of stats and points," Ravens coach Jim Harbaugh said.

But Baltimore did not get called for a single penalty, didn't commit a turnover and registered four takeaways ? including three interceptions of rookie quarterback T.J. Yates.

"I always say there is a right way to do things, there is a wrong way to do things and there is just the Ravens' way of doing things," linebacker Terrell Suggs said. "It wasn't pretty but we're not really a pretty team. We got the W and now it's on to the AFC championship."

The Texans (11-7) are headed home, but with their heads high. Their first foray into the postseason began with a 31-10 rout of Cincinnati and ended with a valiant effort behind a determined rookie quarterback and a defense that lived up to its No. 2 regular-season ranking.

"Guys are disappointed, but at the same time, being this was our first time, it was a great learning experience for us," said wide receiver Andre Johnson, who had eight catches for 111 yards. "When we come back and get in this position again, we'll know how to deal with it."

Arian Foster ran for 132 yards, the first player to top 100 yards on the ground against the Ravens in the postseason. That gave him an NFL-record 285 yards rushing over his first two playoff games.

"We gave it our best shot, but the beautiful thing about his thing we have in Houston is that it can only go up from here," Foster said. "Houston should be excited about it. I'm excited about it, and this franchise is excited about it."

Baltimore led 17-3 after the first quarter, and interceptions by Lardarius Webb and Ed Reed in the final 7 1/2 minutes helped the advantage stand up.

Reed has eight interceptions in 10 playoff games, few bigger than the last one.

"You can't say enough about him," Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson said. "His big plays always seem to happen when you need one."

Yates' three interceptions matched the total he had in six regular season games.

"I can't have the turnovers," Yates said. "If we don't turn the ball over like that, we have a chance to win. And we still had a chance to win. If I'd done a better job of protecting the football, I really think we'd have come out with the win today. We did a good job of moving the ball and we had some big plays, but you can't have that many picks."

The rookie QB was forced into Houston's starting lineup because Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart got hurt, part of a string of injuries the Texans managed to overcome en route to the AFC South title. That Houston was in the second round of the playoffs at all was seen as a significant accomplishment, given they lost two quarterbacks to injuries, played nine games without Johnson and finished without sack specialist Mario Williams.

Afterward, owner Bob McNair pulled aside coach Gary Kubiak to offer some encouraging words.

"I told him how proud I was. ... To come out and play the way this team has played, I think it's just remarkable," McNair said. "Where would New England have been if (Tom) Brady wasn't playing, and if Wes Welker wasn't playing, and if their best defensive player wasn't playing? Go down the list of any of these teams and ask where they would be ? and they wouldn't be in the playoffs. And this team was in the playoffs."

Down 17-13 at halftime, Houston twice held the Ravens without a first down in the third quarter before driving to the Baltimore 32. From there, Neil Rackers' 50-yard field goal try hit the crossbar and dropped into the end zone.

Baltimore then launched a drive in which seldom-used Lee Evans made a sensational one-handed catch for a 30-yard gain on third-and-5 from the Houston 39. On fourth-and-goal inside the 1, Rice was stuffed by linebacker Tim Dobbins for no gain.

"That's a huge play," Houston defensive end J.J. Watt said. "Those are the type of plays that win playoffs games. Obviously, we wish it had gone the other way, but those are the type of plays that you remember."

The Texans couldn't move the ball, and the Ravens took the ensuing punt at the Houston 49. But three plays netted only 4 yards, and Sam Koch punted for the seventh time.

Minutes later, the Ravens went three and out for the fourth time in five second-half possessions. Fortunately for Baltimore, the defense compensated for the team's inability to add to its early lead.

"You have to do whatever you have to do to win a football game," Harbaugh said.

NOTES: Baltimore improved to 6-0 against Houston, 2-0 this season. ... It was the Ravens' first home playoff win since 2000. ... With the Ravens' home win, it's the first time since the NFL went to current playoff format in 1990 that the first seven games have been won by the home team.

Paterno was unsure how to handle abuse tip: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Joe Paterno, the longtime Penn State University football coach fired in the fallout from child sex abuse allegations against former assistant Jerry Sandusky, says he was unsure how to handle the first report about Sandusky that reached him in 2002.

"I didn't know exactly how to handle it, and I was afraid to do something that might jeopardize what the university procedure was," Paterno told The Washington Post in his first extensive public comments since being dismissed by the university in November.

"So I backed away and turned it over to some other people, people I thought would have a little more expertise than I did. It didn't work out that way."

He was referring to a report he received from an assistant coach, Mike McQueary, who said he had seen Sandusky abusing a boy in a Penn State locker room shower.

Paterno said McQueary did not provide him with specific details about what he saw.

"You know, he didn't want to get specific. And to be frank with you I don't know that it would have done any good, because I never heard of, of, rape and a man," he said.

Paterno's decision to tell college officials and not police about the 2002 incident was the basis for his dismissal by the Penn State Board of Trustees' on November 9. Also fired was university president Graham Spanier.

The former coach, who faces no charges, spoke in an interview with Washington Post sports columnist Sally Jenkins published on the paper's website on Saturday afternoon.

Paterno, 85, was admitted to a hospital in State College, Pennsylvania, on Friday because of minor complications from his treatment for lung cancer, which was diagnosed two month ago. Jenkins interviewed Paterno at his home this week.

A family spokesman said on Saturday afternoon that his condition had improved.

Paterno told the Post he was initially reluctant to speak. "I wanted everybody to settle down," he said.

News of his firing sparked rioting in State College where Penn State is located.

Sandusky faces 52 charges stemming from accusations by 10 men who say he molested them as juveniles over a 15-year period. Sandusky, 67, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and no date has been set for his trial. He is under house arrest.

If Sandusky is found guilty, "I'm sick about it," Paterno said.

A member of the College Hall of Fame, Paterno was head coach of the Nittany Lions for 46 years. With 409 victories at Penn State, he won more games in Division 1 college football than any other coach in the sport's history.

Penn State hired New England Patriots assistant coach Bill O'Brien to replace Paterno as head coach a week ago.

Obama, Turkish prime minister affirm cooperation (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The White House says President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (REH'-jehp TY'-ihp UR'-doh-wahn) have spoken on the phone to discuss Syria, Iraq and Iran, and affirm their support for democracy and engagement at a fraught moment for the Middle East.

Turkey is a key U.S. ally in a region roiled by violence in Syria and Iran's growing belligerence. A White House statement on the discussion between Obama and Erdogan on Friday said they agreed to continue to condemn the brutal actions of the Assad regime in Syria that have elicited cries for democracy from anti-government protesters there.

They also discussed Iran's nuclear program and how Iran should engage with the international community.

On Iraq, they voiced support for an inclusive transition to democracy.

CHICAGO - For all the talk about the Chicago Cubs' future, Theo Epstein isn't ready to write them off for next season.

The club's new president of baseball operations says the Cubs just might surprise a few people even though there are question marks on the roster and holes in the farm system.

Epstein sees each season as a "sacred opportunity to win" and insists the Cubs "have more talent than we're given credit for."

"Check back in the middle of the season," Epstein said Saturday during a question-and-answer session with fans at the Cubs Convention. "We might just have the ability to really surprise some people, do some damage in the National League Central."

Chicago is undergoing a major overhaul, and a quick turnaround appears unlikely. There were some rumblings the Cubs were eyeing Prince Fielder, particularly after they hired manager Dale Sveum from Milwaukee's staff, but don't count on that.

"There haven't been any discussions with us with Prince," said Sveum, the Brewers' hitting coach the past three seasons after serving as their bench coach and third-base coach. "He's a heck of a player. He's probably one of my favorite guys that I've ever coached, but that's just not going to happen. We have a first baseman in Bryan LaHair and (prospect Anthony) Rizzo waiting in the wings as well. We're doing OK with big power, left-handed hitters right now."

They're OK in their fans' eyes, too.

There's a big sense of optimism surrounding the Cubs as they try to break a championship drought that dates to 1908. Long-suffering fans are hopeful that Epstein along with new general manager Jed Hoyer can turn things around and help bring home that elusive title, just as they did in Boston.

They see a plan. They see a roster getting overhauled. They see reason to have hope, and right there with them are the owners, the Ricketts family.

Chairman Tom Ricketts said, "2011 wasn't what we wanted it to be on the field, but off the field, we've added some people that I think will get the organization going in the right direction. And I think we have a bright future."

He said president Crane Kenney was the one who actually requested permission from Boston to speak to Epstein, and after negotiations began, they flew him in for a clandestine meeting in Chicago. The secret got out when a fan spotted Epstein at a Starbucks and told the Chicago Tribune.

"We were so secret," Ricketts said. "We flew him in secretly, we picked him up secretly, all these things. And then he hops out of the car to get an iced coffee. If you're going to go to Starbucks, why didn't you just fly in on United and put up a billboard?"

That misstep aside, Ricketts knew he was the man for the job. The task is no small one.

Management has already started gutting the roster, with Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Pena and Carlos Zambrano gone. The Cubs have been stocking up on prospects along with young and inexpensive players with major league experience, beefing up the farm system while hoping low-risk investments pay big dividends.

"We'll be scratching and clawing, trying to acquire as many assets as we can," Epstein said. "Very bluntly, we don't have enough of them. We don't have enough good players. We don't have enough young players. We don't have enough players whose contributions on the field exceed or match their salary, so we're going to be scrapping and clawing to acquire those guys as we feel that they can maximize our competitiveness now and create that foundation for long-term success."

The Cubs have made a big commitment to their minor league system and scouting. They have an academy in the Dominican Republic in the works, hoping to tap into a fertile market, and although Epstein said the system is deeper than he expected, it is a bit thin at the higher levels.

"There aren't necessarily a lot of high-impact players that are close to the big leagues," Epstein said. "If there were, it would be one of the best systems in baseball. We're not. There's a lot of room for improvement, a lot of work to do to get where we want to be, but there are a number of interesting players. ... We do have a lot of depth, albeit at the lower levels. I think with a few more acquisitions and prospects and a solid draft, you're going to see our system start to creep up into the upper third ? which is a nice place to be."

NOTES: Tom Ricketts had little to say about a sexual assault allegation against star shortstop Starlin Castro, other than he hopes it gets resolved quickly. ... The Cubs announced they are adding the "Budweiser Patio" in the right-field bleacher section for the upcoming season. The plan calls for a 75-foot long LED board that will show information such as the pitch count along with a player's picture and statistics. The patio will accommodate groups of 50, 100 or 150 guests with seats and standing-room only tickets that will include all-inclusive food and beverage packages. ... Kenney, the president of business operations, also said the Cubs remain committed to renovating Wrigley Field rather than building a new ballpark. "We're here for good," he said.

CES 2012: Makerbot Replicator prints large 3D objects in two colors (Yahoo! News)

Regular printers may be boring, but 3D printers are not. Not only can they be used to create new bones and military spiderbots, they can also be used to make figments of your imagination come to life. If you're thinking of getting your own, check out the newly-announced MakerBot Replicator. Sure, you can't print a car out with it, but it can at least make larger objects that its predecessor, the Thing-O-Matic. It can also use two colors at once.

MakerBot Industries, which makes artificial hermit crab shells on the side, unveiled the Replicator at the recent 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The company's new product can make objects as big as a loaf of bread, which is great if you have super sized printing needs. You can even choose between the kind of plastic Lego bricks are made of or biodegradable corn plastic for its feedstock, which is what you call the spools of material it uses to print your creations. It can make you dual-colored figures, too, though this feature will cost you extra.

Unlike the Thing-O-Matic that you have to build on your own, the Replicator will be shipped fully-assembled. This means it comes ready to print objects that you've either designed on your own using a 3D modeling program or downloaded from the internet. Now available for pre-order, the basic Replicator model will cost you $1,749, while the one that's capable of dual-color printing costs $250 on top of that.

Google, LG to team up on 'Google TV Nexus' edition for next release?

While not all of Google's aims to change cellphones with its Nexus brand program may have been achieved, it has created some admirable devices in cooperation with HTC and Samsung (way to pass on that one Sony Ericsson). According to Bloomberg, its next step may be to do the same with LG for TVs. As product manager Rishi Chandra mentioned in an interview with us, the next focus for Google TV will center around increasing its ability to personalize the user experience and further enhance content discovery, and anonymous sources indicate LG could get first crack at it later this year. What's odd about this development is that on TVs, so far the two versions of hardware that have debuted already featured software largely free of manufacturer customizations, unlike phones. At this year's CES LG, along with Vizio, is among the first to show a custom skin for the software, along with its new remote. However, the original aim of the Nexus was to work "even more closely with our partners to bring devices to the market that are going to help showcase very quickly the we're working on" so if this can help cut down the long window we saw before the last Google TV update, we're all for it.

Stocks slip on reports of eurozone downgrades

U.S. stocks dropped on Friday, snapping a four-day winning streak after news reports that Standard & Poor's would downgrade credit ratings on several eurozone countries.

The ratings agency was reportedly set to downgrade eurozone countries, including France and Austria, but leave the ratings of Germany and the Netherlands unchanged. French Finance Minister Francois Baroin said the country has been notified of a one-notch cut.

"This is going to destabilize lot of those funding packages because they are all based on the AAA rating, and now you are going to have AA+ for France and Austria, and maybe down two notches for Italy," said Alan Valdes, director of floor operations for DME Securities in New York.

Friday's slide came as investors' focus shifted back to the euro zone's debt crisis.

In recent days, the S&P 500 had reached five-month highs on the back of solid U.S. economic data. The tight relationship between U.S. stocks and the euro has broken down in recent weeks, a sign investors have placed less emphasis on the euro zone's woes.

The Friday selloff shows Europe's debt problems can still make U.S. investors skittish. However, it is notable that the major U.S. stock indexes finished well off the day's lows.

Banks led the decline, as the impending downgrades and lackluster earnings from JPMorgan Chase & Co drove those shares lower. The S&P financial index fell 0.8 percent, making it the worst performer of the 10 major S&P sectors.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 48.96 points, or 0.39 percent, to 12,422.06 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 6.41 points, or 0.49 percent, to 1,289.09. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 14.03 points, or 0.51 percent, to 2,710.67.

For the week, the Dow rose 0.5 percent, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.9 percent, and the Nasdaq gained 1.4 percent.

Investors will look to earnings next week for insight on how the euro zone's debt woes may affect profits.

"If you get a weak recession or deep recession in Europe, it is going to hurt our companies and bring our market right back down," Valdes said.

JPMorgan Chase slid 2.5 percent to $35.92 after the bank said fourth-quarter profit fell as the European debt crisis weighed on trading and corporate deal-making. Chief Executive Jamie Dimon expressed renewed concerns about the eurozone debt crisis.

The KBW index of bank stocks slipped 0.4 percent, following a streak of gains. The index was still up more than 10 percent for the year.

Bank of America shares fell 2.7 percent to $6.61. Goldman Sachs lost 2.2 percent to $98.96.

Volume was light with about 6.39 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, below the daily average of 6.68 billion.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by 1,941 to 1,036, while on the Nasdaq, decliners beat advancers 1,666 to 804.

Failed Russian space probe plunging back to Earth (Reuters)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) ? A stranded Russian science satellite, loaded with rocket fuel for a roundtrip mission to Mars, is expected to plunge back to Earth on Sunday, but officials said on Friday they don't know when or where it will hit.

The spacecraft was designed to retrieve soil samples from the Martian moon Phobos, but it became stuck in Earth's orbit after a botched launch on November 8.

Since then, the spacecraft has slowly been losing altitude due to gravity's pull.

The 14-ton spacecraft, which includes about 11 tons of toxic rocket fuel, is expected to re-enter the atmosphere Sunday or Monday, the Russian space agency Roscosmos said in a statement on Friday.

Due to constant changes in Earth's upper atmosphere, which is strongly influenced by solar activity, the exact time and place of the satellite's return is unknown. Predictions on Friday had the satellite, known as Phobos-Grunt, re-entering over the Atlantic Ocean, east of Argentina, around 3:22 p.m. EST.

"The technology is such that there is no way we can control or predict where Phobos-Grunt will come down," said Michael Simpson, executive director of the Colorado-based Secure World Foundation.

"With 73 percent of the planet covered in water, odds are this thing is going to splash down rather than hit land," he said. "The chance that this is going to be a threat to anyone is extremely remote, but people are concerned."

How much of the satellite will survive the fiery plunge through the atmosphere is unknown, though experts believe the load of toxic fuel will not be among the debris. Russia said the probe's fuel tank is made of aluminum, which is expected to incinerate during re-entry.

In 2008, the U.S. Navy shot down a stranded U.S. spy satellite reportedly to cut the contamination risk of 100 pounds (45 kg) of rocket fuel. That satellite's tank, however, was believed to have been made of metal alloys more resistant to heating than aluminum, Simpson said.

One component of Phobos-Grunt that likely will survive re-entry is a small return capsule specifically designed to make a crash landing back to Earth in 2014.

Phobus-Grunt's return to Earth is being monitored by dozens of organizations, including the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordinating Committee, an offshoot of the United Nations' Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. The panel includes representatives from 12 space agencies, including NASA, Russia and China.

The spacecraft is the third large satellite to return to Earth since September, when NASA's defunct Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite fell out of orbit, showering debris into the Pacific Ocean. Germany's Rosat X-ray telescope re-entered a month later over the Bay of Bengal.

San Jose Sharks' Todd McLellan to coach NHL All-Stars

The Sharks' Todd McLellan will be coaching at the All-Star weekend event later this month in Ottawa.

McLellan edged out Vancouver's Alain Vigneault for the final spot when the Canucks lost to Florida 2-1 on Monday night.

The spot is determined by which team has the greatest points percentage in the Western Conference through Monday's games. New York Rangers coach John Tortorella wrapped up the Eastern Conference's spot Friday.

Boston's Claude Julien is guaranteed a spot by virtue of the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup in 2011. Julien will be joined by his assistants in Boston, while Tortorella and McLellan will coach the other team.

The All-Star game will be played Sunday, Jan. 29.

Detroit Finance Team Holds First Private Meeting ? CBS Detroit

LANSING (WWJ/AP) ? A team picked to review Detroit?s finances is holding its first meeting.?State Treasurer Andy Dillon says the meeting Tuesday in Lansing is not open to the public, but he?ll talk to reporters.

A 10-member team appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder is trying to determine if a financial emergency exists in Detroit, a key step toward possible appointment of an emergency manager with broad powers to cut spending.

The team includes a former Supreme Court justice, former college presidents and a former Detroit police chief. The team has until late February to report its findings, although Snyder could ask for them sooner.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said the city still has financial stress but won?t run out of cash by April as previously predicted.??He?last released an updated financial and operational restructuring plan update highlighting a cost savings from 1,000, although he said it may not be enough admitted the new plan still may not be enough to prevent an emergency takeover.

So what does Bing think the team is learning?

?I don?t know that they?re learning anything that?s not already available, quite frankly, because we?ve got all of our information out,? Bing told WWJ Newsradio 950.

?It?s a public document. Anything that want we will provide them with and whatever time they need to spend with us, once they?re down here, we?re going to be receptive to it,? he said.

As enacted, a new state law allows the governor to take over a local government or school district by appointing an emergency?manager to assume the authority and responsibility of locally elected officials. It includes the power to terminate collective bargaining agreements and even dissolve a unit of government.

Some have called the new law unconstitutional.

The group that?s trying to repeal the law?is ramping up its efforts to put the issue on the November ballot.? Brandon Jessup from the group ?Michigan Forward? believes it?s a civil rights issue.

?It seems very clear that Governor Snyder and State Treasurer Dillon are on the red line to place emergency managers, to place their own unaccountable appointees over some of the major cities of the state,? said Jessep. ?And we have a grave concern, not just for the voting rights, but what about the ecomonic access and opportunity for the people who live in those communities??

Jessup said his group has more than enough signatures to put the issue on the ballot, but they are stepping up efforts to secure a surplus.

New Report Finds That Risk of Unemployment Varies by College Major

Study also finds that some BA?s outperform graduate degrees in the job market

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/?? Unemployment figures show the jobless rate for recent college graduates with Bachelor?s Degrees has been running at an unacceptable 8.9 percent. But, a new study from the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce finds that unemployment among job seekers with no better than a high school diploma is a catastrophic 22.9 percent ? and an almost unthinkable 31.5 percent among high school dropouts.

So, is college still worth it? A major conclusion of the new report is that it all depends on your major. And while a college degree gives job seekers a formidable advantage over those without, the study points out, not all degrees are created equal, and there are a number of factors that prospective students should consider before sending off their college applications.

Choice of major determines unemployment. Risk of unemployment for recent graduates varies considerably depending on their major. The highest rate, the study found, is among Architecture graduates (13.9 percent) due to the collapse of the construction and home-building industries in the recession. Unemployment is generally higher for non-technical majors, such as the Arts (11.1 percent) or Social Sciences (8.9 percent).

What employed college graduates make also depends on what they take.? Median earnings among recent college graduates vary from $55,000 among Engineering majors to $30,000 in the Arts, as well as Psychology and Social Work.

People who make technology are better off than people who use technology. For recent graduates in Math and Computing, unemployment is low for specialists who can write software and invent new applications (6%), but still comparatively high (11.2 percent) for those who use software to manipulate, mine and disseminate information.

Unemployment is lowest where the ties between majors and occupations are highest. Unemployment rates are relatively low (5.4 percent) for recent graduates in Engineering, the Sciences, Education, or Healthcare related majors because they are tied to stable or growing industry sectors and occupations. Psychology and Social Work graduates also have relatively low rates (7.3 percent), because almost half of them work in the Healthcare or Education sectors.

At the same time, majors that are closely aligned with occupations and industries in low demand can misfire. For example, unemployment rates for recent college graduates who majored in Architecture start high at 13.9 percent and due to its strong alignment with the collapse in construction and housing, unemployment remains high even for experienced college graduates at 9.2 percent.

Consider a graduate degree. The overall unemployment rate for people with graduate degrees is just 3 percent.? With the exception of Arts and Education, where pay traditionally has been low, workers with graduate degrees average between $60,000 and $100,000 per year, compared to a range of $48,000 and $62,000 for workers with Bachelor?s Degrees.

Not all graduate degrees outperform all BA?s on employment. For example, experienced college graduates in a healthcare field have lower unemployment rates than people with graduate degrees in every other field except the life and physical sciences.
